The Relic by Preston & Child is one of my favourite novels. It takes place on the museum of Natural History in New York, 1995. Several murders have occurred and rumours about the se called “ Museum Beast” began to float around once again. The creature is called Mbwun or “he who walks on all fours” and is created when a person consumes plant called Mbwun lily. Mutating beyond recognition, the creature hunts and kills its prey in order to feed on the hypothalamus, the part of the brain that handles blood pressure, body temperature, metabolism and sleep.
This is because that the creature need the seeds from the lily in order to survive. When the crates on museum that contained the spores were locked away from the basement, it began to kill humans again. The hormones that the creature rely on from the plant also exist in the hypothalamus. The book was later turned into a movie in 1997 that was awesome, but the book was better in my opinion.
So after the short description, some personal thoughts on my design. I wanted it too look like a panther crossed with a reptile and human, sort of. Its not entirely novel accurate. Its not described from what i remember if the creature has a tail at all. Also it has much more fur on the arms, I did a concept based more on its look in the novel but it didn't look to good. So i went with an own design instead. I gave it double teeth and a lot them because, its an unnatural creature so i just played around a bit.
